Patient referral information
NHS-funded fertility assessment and treatment
If you wish to be considered for NHS-funded investigations and treatment, please visit your GP to have the initial investigations and a referral to Fertility Exeter arranged.
What to expect
Your GP will make a referral, which will go to the DRSS sorting centre to be checked by their in-house doctors to ensure it is directed to the correct department and that it contains all the information we need to proceed with an appointment. At this point, you will also receive correspondence from the Overseas team to ensure your suitability for an appointment. Once we receive it here, it will be triaged by our team, and we will then be in touch via post with an appointment for you to see one of our Fertility Consultants or an Associate Specialist. At the initial consultation, your consultant will ask you a series of questions, review the results of investigations the GP has completed and advise you on the next steps.
Please be aware that, if you require assisted conception treatment, your eligibility for NHS funding will be checked against the criteria published by your ICB. For example, Devon ICB’s current policy requires women to have a BMI of more than 19 and less than 30, and for men to have a BMI of less than 30. They should also both be non-smokers for at least 3 months, have no children together (biological or adopted) from the current relationship, and at least one partner should have no living children at all. Treatment must commence before the female partner’s 40th birthday. A welfare of the child assessment would also be completed prior to any treatment being offered.
Self-funded fertility assessment and treatment
If you would like to be seen for self-funded fertility assessment and treatment, or if you are not eligible for NHS funding, you can request an appointment at Fertility Exeter without a referral from your GP. Please complete our self-referral form.
What to expect
Once we have received your referral, we will get in touch with you within 14 working days. You will receive an appointment to see one of our Fertility Consultants or an Associate Specialist within 4-6 weeks of your referral. At the initial consultation, your consultant will ask you a series of questions, review any results from other clinics or previous treatment, and advise you on the next steps.
Please be aware that, if you require assisted conception treatment, we require the female partner to have a BMI of less than 35. Treatment must commence before the female partner is 43 (50, if donor eggs are being considered), and both partners should be non-smokers. A welfare of the child assessment would also be completed prior to any treatment being offered.
